Summer 2009 Course Syllabus (BUS 395)

Exams:  None

Academic Credit:  BUS 395 may NOT be counted toward your major as a major elective; however, it may be used toward the 15 credits of the upper-division elective requirement.

Required Work:
1. Over the semester, you will need to complete a minimum of 150 hours of work for your host employer.  This is equivalent to approximately 10 hours per week during the term.

2. Keep a weekly journal of your intern activities.  This is for your own use in writing your final paper, and will not be handed-in.

3. Paper #1- This is an on-line form that needs to be completed within a week after your placement.  Go to http://career.shidler.hawaii.edu. Click on “For Undergraduates”. Then click on "Search and Apply for Internships" and complete the log-in process. Then click on “Submit Placement Information”, and complete and submit this on-line form.

4. Paper #2- A five-page paper, double-spaced, due near the completion of the semester (check course schedule on page 2 for exact dates) to be e-mailed to rvarley@hawaii.edu.  Again, be sure this paper is written in a professional manner. This paper should be in three parts. It should discuss:

• An overview of what you accomplished in your internship
• What you learned in your internship
• How your Shidler classes prepared you for this professional experience.

**Make reference to two business news articles that relate to your either particular internship, the company you worked for, or the industry within which you worked. The two articles should be sent as an e-mail attachment.

5. Supervisor Evaluation- At the end of the semester, an e-mail notice will be sent directly to the supervisor you identified in your Paper #1 Placement Information Form. This is an on-line form that will need to be completed and submitted by your supervisor.

Etiquette:
You will be required to interview with the Host Company.  Therefore, you must prepare a resume and be ready for an interview.  If accepted by the Host Company, remember that you are a guest in their organization, and a representative of the Shidler College of Business. It is your job to blend into their organization as much as possible.  You should also stick to your original work schedule as established with your employer; vacations and "days off" from this schedule should be approved in advance by your internship sponsor.  If you are unable to work due to illness, be sure to inform your supervisor.

As an intern, you are expected to maintain a professional manner at all times.  That includes all phone and e-mail correspondences.
